Writers Jam Ends the ASCAP Expo on Many High Notes

Concert ReviewMay 2, 2011ASCAP

What a perfect way to end the Expo! After several days of panel discussions on the music biz, songwriting craft and endless technological aspects of production, the Writers Jam all about the music. Attendees were treated to a mini-concert by four brilliant singer/songwriters passing the baton, taking turns one-upping each other. Dan Wilson mesmerized the room with an acoustic guitar version of his hit song "Someone Like You" that he co-wrote with Adele. Ingrid Michaelson performed her new song "Maybe" on the ukulele, before switching over to the piano for a beautiful and haunting ballad she said was "inspired by zombie movies," earning herself a standing ovation. John Rzeznik treated the crowd to acoustic versions of his hit Goo Goo Dolls songs "Black Balloon" and "Broadway." Chris Stapleton was his usual cool, laid-back self and performed a "drinking song" he wrote for Tim McGraw. Had the moderator not stepped in to announce the time was up, this one probably would have kept going into the night. And how do you know you're at the ASCAP Expo? Dan complimented the crowd's sense of rhythm, saying it was "nice having a room full of musicians that don't rush the clap." Thank you, ASCAP, for an amazing few days. See you next year!
