Rock Fore! Dough concert brings out talent

Augusta greeted one of the hottest days of the year with an event that has become one of its hottest entertainment tickets.

The sixth annual Drive For Show, Rock Fore! Dough concert Tuesday night featured local musicians Will McCranie and Jacob Beltz, South Carolina supergroup Occasional Milkshake (with Hootie and the Blowfish guitar player Mark Bryan), Colbie Caillat and the Goo Goo Dolls. For Bryan and Caillat, the concert, which benefits First Tee of Augusta programs, represented a return trip to the driving range/amphitheater.

Caillat said the concert represented a welcome break from the theaters and arenas she usually plays. She said that although two appearances might not make her a Blowfish regular (Hootie and the Blowfish have headlined the event four times), she's not opposed to the idea of making Augusta in April a regular stop.

"It would be great if it was," she said. "It is a really great event and a really great cause."

The concert marked the first time the Goo Goo Dolls have played the event. Lead singer John Rzeznik said that while Rock Fore! Dough does mark the first time the band has played a driving range in its more than 20 years together, the members have plugged in on stranger stages.

"Yeah, certainly not the strangest place we've played," he said with a laugh. "We've played in a volcano in Italy, on an iceberg, an aircraft carrier and in a bunker."

Bass player Robby Takac said playing such events is one of the benefits of longevity. "It's just one of the many cool things," he said. "If you hang around long enough, then you get to do cool things like this."

For McCranie, not only was it his first time playing Rock Fore! Dough, but also his first time playing a professionally staged, festival-style concert. He said it reminded him why he puts the time and effort into his music.

"This is the goal," he said. "I mean, that was really nice. All I had to worry about was the audience. That and not breaking a string."
