Goo Goo Dolls return to London

They’ve played Call the Office and they’ve played Budweiser Gardens.

But when Buffalo’s Goo Goo Dolls return to downtown London in 2014, it will be at the London Music Hall for a Feb. 20 gig, promoters announced Wednesday.

Goo Goo Dolls’ signature hit Iris placed No. 1 in a Billboard Top 100 for 1992-2012. But in 2013 all they seem to hear about Iris is that U.S. pop superstar Taylor Swift had been performing it in her concerts. So. Is it a big deal?

“Apparently, it's a pretty big deal because a lot of people bring it up. You know, Beyonce’s covered some of our songs, too -- that doesn't seem to get as much coverage,” bassist Robby Takac said in a Free Press interview.

The band was founded in Buffalo in 1986 and often played London early in its career. Back in the day, the Goo Goo Dolls’ bassist celebrated a birthday at an iconic downtown London club -- and his Buffalo bandmates made him feel special. “Omigawd -- that was years ago. We played at Call the Office actually,” he said in a telephone interview earlier this year.

“It was my birthday. They let me play six-string guitar which I don’t think has ever happened since.”

The year of that on-stage party has faded, but it was a Sept. 30 sometime 15 years or more ago. A Londoner who wished he’d been there said the urban myth has Takac playing an Alice Cooper song once he got a grip on that guitar. “You are exactly correct. I played Eighteen -- but I wasn't 18,” he said.

More details on the Feb. 20, 2014, gig at the 185 Queens Ave. London Music Hall complex are expected soon.
