The Goo Goo Dolls will have a brush with vintage rock & roll fame in the New Year when the trio signs on as the opening act for a handful of tour dates with the Rolling Stones.

As we previously reported (see "Goo Goo Dolls Enjoy Touring Spotlight, But Will Open For Stones"), the Goos have been tapped for six shows slated for the last week of March 1999.

MTV News caught up with the Dolls recently during a break in its own tour, which rolls into Fort Wayne, Indiana this evening, and asked them about how they received word that the Stones wanted them for a stretch of opening dates.

"I was sitting around my house," joked Dolls frontman Johnny Rzeznik, "and Mick called, you know. We'd been hanging for a while in St. Moritz (laughs) and then he just asked if we wanted to do it, so I was like, 'Cool.'"

"I said, 'I'll think about it,'" he continued, tongue still firmly in cheek, "[but] I got back to him eventually. He wouldn't leave me alone, and then he brought out Keith, and you know what that's like. Next thing you know, it's two days later and you're over at the house trying to find a place to order pizza at 5:30 in the morning and he's still drinking. So we decided, yeah we'd do it."

The Rolling Stones tour is expected to kick off on January 25 in Oakland, and other acts slated to handle some of the opening duties include the Corrs and Johnny Lang.
