Before there was Gaga there was Goo Goo, and while today The Goo Goo Dolls don't have total dominance over the collective conscience of the entire world, Internet and Twitter, The Goo Goo Dolls actually DID dominate pop radio and album sales during the second half of the '90s with Clinton-era classics like "Iris," "Black Balloon" and the still-awesome "Slide." They were on the countdown on the very first episode of "TRL" and even rocked MTV during New Year's Eve 1999. Then The Goo Goo Dolls slid into that place where triple-platinum albums became gold albums -- which is, of course, still respectable. And now The Goo Goo Dolls are putting out their ninth studio album, Something For The Rest Of Us, featuring their new song and video "Home."

"Home" hits that palatable pop sweet spot: It totally drives and has a chorus that soars but lacks an overwhelming hook -- meaning it won't get stuck in your head in that grating way. (It's the type of sticks-in-you song you wish "American Idol" finalists could manage to master.) "Home" also makes good on its promise to address the social malaise and reach everyday us-types struggling to make it in an effed-up economy and environment. It's a song about seeking relief and comfort during crappy times. The video feels vaguely late '90s/early 2000s in the good way: lush colors and artsy jump cuts intertwined with both a lack and presence of intimacy. The no-really-we-mean it key change shifts the scope of video into less dismal, more hopeful terrain without an overly obvious resolution -- a smart move that highlights their sophisticated maturity.
