With a sometimes underrated arsenal of pop and rock hits at their disposal, the Goo Goo Dolls seem like a natural fit for a summer show at the beach.

Appropriately, guitarist and vocalist Johnny Rzeznik seems to be looking forward to Saturday, June 21, when the band will appear at the Amphitheater at The Wharf in Orange Beach. The 7 p.m. show is part of a co-headlining summer with Daughtry, putting a definite emphasis on straight-ahead rock. And that suits Rzeznik just fine.

"I love putting on a big show," Rzeznik said. "You know, I love working with the lighting designer and putting a big show together ... I'm a songwriter, but I also like to entertain people. I love being an entertainer. I love putting on a big rock concert."

The Goo Goo Dolls have the requisite arsenal of tunes. They might be best remembered for "Iris," "Name" and "Slide," but they've charted numerous other songs since 1991, including "We Are the Normal," "Naked," "Black Balloon," "Broadway," "Here is Gone" and "Stay With You." They've been on Billboard's rock and adult contemporary charts this year with "Come To Me," a single from "Magnetic," the album they released in June 2013.

Rzeznik says "Magnetic" continues to be a big part of the band's shows. In addition to the singles "Come to Me" and "Rebel Beat," he says that fans seem to have latched onto a few more tracks. "I notice a pretty strong audience response to a song called "Slow It Down" and a song called "Keep the Car Running," he says.

Speaking of those fans: As with any group active for nearly 30 years, the fan base has grown up somewhat. "Sometimes I see a lot of old friends" in front of the stage, Rzeznik says. "It's a really big range, from teenagers to people who grew up listening to us, and now they're bringing their kids to the shows. It's a fun experience."

"I always hope that we gave them a night to remember," he says. "We try to bring it as hard as we can, every night.

The Goo Goo Dolls and Daughtry perform Saturday, June 21, at the Amphitheater at the Wharf in Orange Beach. The 7 p.m. show also features Plain White T's.
