Goo Goo Dolls

May 1, 2006

The Goo Goo Dolls played predominately new material to an intimate crowd during a Z99.5 radio promotion gig at the Music Mill, Indianapolis. Goo is warming up for what is slated to be a hot and hectic summer tour with the Counting Crows in support of their 2006 spring release “Let Love In.”

In general, radio has been more than kind to The Goo. For over a decade, it seems like you hear a Goo tune at least once a day whether you’re in your car, a grocery store, laundry mat, or coffee shop. The band has been around a long time and they’ve gotten gooey with monster hits “Name” as well as "Iris" which was featured on the soundtrack to the 1998 film City of Angels.

Originally founded in Buffalo, New York in 1985 by guitarist/vocalist Johnny Rzeznik, the band was originally known as the "Sex Maggots.” The band changed their name to the Goo Goo Dolls which was plucked from an ad in a True Detective magazine and herein lies the power of a great name of a band. Catchy name combined with power-pop lingering mainstream melodies…a one-two punch.
Signed by Metal Blade Records, they released their self-titled debut album in 1987. Wide commercial success didn’t follow until the release of “A Boy Named Goo” in 1995 with the smash single “Name” which literally blanketed radio stations across the United States.

Mainstream success also brought about a lengthy legal battle with Metal Blade Records over royalties, and in turn, the band simply bumped up to parent company, Warner Brothers. In 1998, "Iris" was released on the City of Angels soundtrack and The Goos were more than sticky….the song remained number one on the charts for 18 weeks and was nominated for three Grammys.

With their latest release, “Let Love In”, the Goo Goo Dolls are staying pretty true to form and radio remains loyal as “Better Days” was in heavy rotation months prior to the album’s release. You can catch The Goo on the tube as they’re scheduled to appear on the Tonight Show May 16th and Carson Daly on May 17th or catch a live show this summer coming to a city near you (see following tour schedule.)
