The Goo Goo Dolls have officially sacked drummer Mike Malinin, according to statements issued by both parties. Malinin, who replaced original drummer George Tutuska 19 years ago, had been sitting out the current leg of the band's tour due to a family matter. Lifehouse drummer Rick Woolstenhulme, Jr., had been filling in for Malinin.

According to ClassicRock.com, Malinin's first act upon learning of his firing was to contact recently ousted Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. On New Year's Eve, Malinin Tweeted the following: “Hey @TheRealSambora, do you want to start a band with me?”

Malinin issued a brief statement which read, in part: “Got some news today. Just wanted to say thanks for the fans who’ve supported me for 19 years. It was not my decision to leave the band – but no grudges held. I wish them all the best. Best of luck and happy travels to them.”

Goo Goo Dolls founders John Rzeznik and Robby Takac issued their own statement soon after.

“It is true Mike is no longer with the band, but we wish him the best in his new journey, and hope that fans and friends will take a minute to consider this decision was not taken lightly by anyone involved.

“Things happen personally and professionally that drive difficult decisions like this. But rest assured we are looking forward to continuing our 28-year journey as GGDS.”
