The Goo Goo Dolls, one of the most popular alternative-rock bands of the '90s, will headline a free Dec. 8 concert in Scottsdale being staged by a wireless-phone company.

The band, which scored No. 1 hits with Iris, Name and Slide, will play outdoors at the Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza.

An executive for Alltell Wireless said the show is being staged as a thank-you to Arizona customers.

"This concert is the culmination of a number of programs Alltel Wireless has conducted in the Valley," said Scott Thompson, vice president of retail services for Arizona.

It comes on the heels of the company's "random acts of kindness program," in which a representative surprised patrons at local grocery stores and gas stations by covering their bills, Thompson said.

John Rzeznik, lead singer for the Goo Goo Dolls, said, "The fans in Phoenix has always been among the best in the country, and we are psyched to come back and play this special show."

The band recently released a greatest-hits collection, which includes 14 songs that made it into the adult top 40.

Gates for the concert will open at 4 p.m., and the show will start at 5:30. Fans are advised to come early because attendance will be capped at 2,000.
